If this 13% holds, it will be the lowest LGBTQ support for a GOP presidential candidate since the LGBTQ vote began being tracked in 1992. Previous low was 14% which happened both in 1992 (GHWBush) and 2016 (Trump).

Gay conservatives were essential in the fight for same-sex marriage, starting in the late 1980s. Andrew Sullivan’s 1989 New Republican article was a landmark document that helped lay the intellectual foundation for legalizing same-sex marriage from a conservative perspective /10

The heart of my book is a history of Log Cabin Republicans, the nation’s oldest, largest, and most important LGBT Republican organization. It was formed nationally in the early 1990s out of about a dozen of gay Republican clubs that were launched in the late 1970s. /6

Then there’s Leonard Matlovich, a decorated Vietnam War hero & conservative Republican who sued the government when he was thrown out of the military upon coming out. Matlovich laid the foundation for the military’s homosexual ban to be overturned 35 years later /5
