If you're at depot capacity it's VERY expensive to add a couple more buses (buy some land for a depot extension, or more expensive another depot). That's why bus companies try to maximise route capacity by using larger buses if at all possible.

Thank-you for explaining this simply. Many bus company overheads aren't linearly scaled, there are big steps with significant cost increases which then have to be spread out, so cost/busy suddenly jumps.
