Dumping on this scale was not just predictable, but predicted. It's the direct result of:
a. 15 years of austerity
b. Reining in and defunding the regulators at the behest of lobbyists.
But it makes you wonder: were the Tories lobbied by professional crime syndicates? Otherwise, why the hell ...?

It would be such an easy win for Labour to throw this as red meat to the papers, get middle England outraged about something that isn't an inflatable dinghy and then fix it.

Thought better of it and am invoicing every outstanding penny before the AI bubble pops instead.

Willing to bet that the 'survey commissioned by Greene King' was distributed in their pubs.

Yeah, agree with that. I think I'm just about leaning towards being glad they did it rather than doing nothing because it established the principle but it's close. Having kids starting out on the web definitely changed my perspective, I'd have been vehemently against it 20 years ago.

I'm a bit more charitable towards the OSA. I don't think it was well designed because it would have been much more effective to go after the money (including the ad money) but I'm on board with the idea that the web needs to be a regulated space that children can use safely & that means age limits.

I could see them trying to add VPN services to the age verification rules at some point but can't see how anything beyond that is even close to workable. They'd have to ban multi-region cloud compute, it would cause absolute chaos.

You heard it here first, Bond's going to end up time travelling. All cinematic universes eventually turn to time travel when they run out of other ways to retcon their inconsistencies.

Story blown up out of nothing IMO. Of course they want to know if total usage has spiked (and of course it has) but I'd be willing to bet that a total estimate is all they've got. And the minister didn't say a ban was on the table, she said nothing is off the table, which is saying nothing at all.
