Ah, thanks, that's fascinating! Had to get my paper knife to cut the relevant pages ...
Do you know if anyone's done a proper study of Archibald? He seems fascinating, and was involved with all sorts of shenanigans and important stuff.
Just bought this nice copy of Robert Bowes's correspondence. Published in 1842, donated to Jesus College Cambridge in 1885 by its Master, George Corrie, who was born in 1793. Pages almost entirely uncut. No wonder it's in such good condition.

Thomas Butler, earl of Ormond, favourite of Elizabeth I and builder of this, the 'best example of an Elizabethan manor house in Ireland', marries Elizabeth Sheffield today, two months or so after the death of his estranged first wife, also, conveniently, named Elizabeth. 6/

John Dee records in his diary a visit from 'Mr Newbury, who had byn at Cambaya in Inde'. This is John Newbery, who between 1580 and 1581 made an epic trip to Iraq and Persia via Tripoli, returning via Constantinople, the Balkans, Poland, Danzig and Hull. He's now planning a further expedition ... 4/

(According to the ODNB, he has been forging letters implicating Lennox in popish plots, which I haven't seen reference to yet.) Anyway, Somer related this to the queen, and her ears pricked up at two points: he said that she should look to herself, for there were “some not farre from about ... 2/

In England, Hatton writes a touching letter to Burghley conveying Elizabeth's condolences on the death of his son-in-law yesterday: 'my good Lord, cast off this woe; let it not touch your heart, in which the wisdom of this world and state hath found her seat for many years, to God's glory'. 5/

In Scotland itself, James VI has somewhat got past the disruption of the past few months and is taking up government again; it's unclear how free his actions really are, though the Raiders are a bit disunited and directionless. He believes that Lennox has finally left Scotland (he's wrong). 4/

The Privy Council at Windsor orders a heavyweight group of courtiers to investigate 'certaine matters in controversie betwene Sir John Conwey and Anthonie Bourne', a tangled case involving sex, money, religion and (as @kjkesselring.bsky.social has shown) a poisoned fig, which we may return to. 5/

To this end, James writes to the council of Edinburgh, highlighting the 'thevis and wikket pepill' in the Borders, where there is 'bludsched, fyreraising, and oppin reiffis', even 'neir the portis of Edinburgh', and ordering them to provide troops for the effort. 4/

Knave, cur, whoreson? I'm not sure any of them have quite the same punch though. It may depend on the relative social status of the interlocutors too.

Scotland remains transfixed by the question of when Lennox will depart. The king has written him a stern letter telling him to go and there are rumours that he's sailed, but no certainty. James intends to travel to Peebles soon to pacify the Borders, the first bit of actual governing in a while. 3/

however, rally round; also today Walsingham writes to Hatton, suggesting he take the opportunity to 'work with her Majesty' (i.e. persuade her) to show some favour to Burghley's other son-in-law, the feckless earl of Oxford, 'that hath long dwelt in her Majesty's displeasure'. 2/
