I used to work in school behaviour support. Cuts since 2010 destroyed services like this and camhs. The resulting costs were far greater than any savings, and children ended up excluded, in pupil referral units, in care and in the criminal justice system. Early intervention is essential.

The English education system has become obsessed with phonics. In my opinion, it's an oversimplification of the process of learning to read. Most of us use sight recognition and context to make sense of text far more than we use phonics.

As a dad of thee adult daughters, I'm guilty of never knowing what to ask for. But I've concluded that the best gift they can give me is to share time feeling relaxed and happy. We're trying to ban any bought gifts at Christmas (birthdays are different), because it just causes stress and expense.
