Five years ago I attempted to write a piece celebrating physical media as it was entering its twilight years. I never finished the piece, but it doesn’t matter, because in the years since there have been about a hundred human interest stories written about Blu-Ray enthusiasts.

While the simple convenience of streaming is compelling, there are a lot of good reasons to love physical media, outlined in these aforementioned articles:

Unfortunately, later Spider-Man games, due to a perception that the web-swinging’s difficulty alienated players, would add more and more invisible stuff to the swinging that made it easier to control and consequently less organic and flexible. In the same way Mario’s movement became increasingly clean after Mario 64, Spider-Man has never truly returned to the mechanically rich web-swinging of Spider-Man 2. Apparently the gameplay experience for the 95% of people who loved the physics-y swinging had to be diminished because of the 5% of people who couldn’t wrap their heads around it, which is a perfect example of how it’s foolish to try pleasing everyone.

It’s very surprising how many of these games were either almost finished, or far into development without any notable issues to speak of, before being canceled. Like many stories about the videogame industry, these are ultimately tales of powerful executives ruining things, not just for players, but also for developers. The people who worked on these games were paid, yes, but months, if not years, of hard work were thrown into the trash, often for very trivial reasons. The people who work on these games usually grow attached to them, and they often are hurt when their work goes unseen and unappreciated by the public.

It’s a very romantic idea that every canceled videogame was a masterpiece that the world was deprived of. But, considering how talented many of these studios were, I think a lot of these would’ve been classics had they been completed. It sucks that we were deprived of a chance to play them, and the developers didn’t get to see us enjoy them.

We no longer live in a monoculture, and it feels like the sins of Seth MacFarlane have followed him into the post-monoculture era, where it’s much more difficult for someone to clear their name. I feel like A Tale of Two Topas not only speaks for itself, but I think it also needs to be acknowledged that MacFarlane didn’t turn into an insane transphobe after receiving criticism for mishandling trans-related things, such as Quagmire’s Dad and About a Girl, unlike some other celebrities I’m not going to mention here. If it sounds like I’m putting the bar too low, maybe I am, but maybe that’s just where the bar fucking is, ok?

Open world games used to be scrappy and fun. There was often something silly about them; if games like Halo 3 were comparable to a meal at a Michelin restaurant, games like Prototype were more comparable to a really good frozen pizza. And it’s maybe time that the industry tried to redirect open world games back towards that mentality, instead of trying to create lobsters that take 90 hours to eat.
