Śnieżnik (1425 m.) seen from Czernica (1083 m.) in the wildest corner of Polish Sudety (not very wild but still the wildest). We share this gentle giant with the Czech Republic. One of the tallest mountains in western Poland.

Góry Stołowe translates to "Table Mountains", and the name comes from sandstone slabs that are almost flat at the top. Here's the biggest and most famous one, Szczeliniec Wielki (922 m. a.s.l.).

Góry Stołowe National Park is rewilding by replacing artificial spruce forests with native trees like beeches and firs. Sometimes that involves simply letting the spruces die, which also reveals some pleasant views.

Stemless carline thistle (dziewięćsił bezłodygowy, Carlina acaulis), an aesthetically pleasing plant that's quite common in Polish mountains. According to legend, Charlemagne used it as treatment against the plague, hence the Latin name.

A 17th century gallows near Wojcieszów, Sudety, Poland. One of only a few such objects in the country. There's no record of it being used for executions but now it's home to a colony of rock ferns.

A dead oak being devoured by larvae of the great capricorn beetle (kozioróg dębosz, Cerambyx cerdo), one of Europe's largest beetles. Sadly I've never seen the beetle itself. The Barycz Valley has the largest population in Poland.

Tree outside my window update: it took its sweet time but it's now fully green and the local birds love it - including this beautiful female black redstart (very common here). I can hear three species through my window: the redstart, a greenfinch, and a serin.
