Would The Village be the opposite of this? A film that starts off seemingly fantastical then deteriorates into something mundane.

I'd recommend both the George Romero original and the 2004 remake. The original might feel pretty dated especially when held against the massive sfx in WWZ but it's still a great film.

I enjoyed WWZ but I think that title still belongs to Dawn of the Dead
