A few days later, Hailey said her case worker showed up with police, insisting her daughter was underweight and needed to be evaluated at the hospital. Spradley rushed to St. Louis Children's Hospital to meet them. There, she said doctors gave the baby a clean bill of health and noted she gained weight since the week prior. Then on Friday, hours after the Missouri Department of Social Services responded to a request for comment on Hailey's case from The Independent, her case worker called Spradley. The state would soon allow Hailey and her daughter to return to Spradley's care, at least until a court made a more permanent placement decision, Spradley said.

Worryingly, a teen in Canada - the first recorded human case in that country - has also contracted H5N1 and is reported to be critically ill. This person also had no known exposure to farm animals, and the source of infection is unclear. Genetic sequencing of the teen's viral strain revealed mutations that render the virus more capable of infecting humans. There are two possibilities that might explain the origin of the Missouri and Canada cases: One is that they contracted the virus from a person with whom they came into contact. Another is that they got it from a non-farm animal, such as a domestic cat or a rodent. Both possibilities would be alarming, especially because the Canadian patient - unlike others thus far — is very ill.

“Dixie” has a long and contentious history in American life. While its origins are disputed, Dan Emmett, a White songwriter who was a member of a blackface minstrel troupe based in New York, is widely credited with composing the song. In Emmet’s version the song is sung by a freed slave fondly remembering his time on a plantation. As the Civil War approached it became the anthem of Confederacy. It was played during South Carolina’s secession convention. Later it was played at the inauguration of Jefferson Davis as the Confederacy’s first and only president. “Dixie” was also part of the score of “The Birth of a Nation,” the movie that helped revive the Ku Klux Klan in 1915.
