As for potential hardware issues, I check the usual:
-RAM tests
-CPU temps
-PSU voltages under load
-Disk SMART self-tests
Any of those coming up bad could explain this.

My guess is that the game had nothing to do with it. Not much to go from, but to me it sounds like either some hardware gone flaky or you've got some deeply-rooted malware.

At any rate, transplanting the registry could cause you trouble down the line. You should probably reinstall Windows.
