Since then, I've seen my employer of 36 years abandon its liberal arts roots, adopt a corporate management style, and refer to students as customers. My son put it well: I worked in the Periclean Age of college teaching.

I'm almost embarrassed to talk about how lucky I was to be born at just the right time. I retired in 2012 when I was 62, with a healthy retirement fund and HSA.
