The fact that 50% of the public support the death penalty only confirms that at least half the public shouldn't be listened to about penal matters. What kind of person is in favour of state executions but draws the line at putting people in the stocks? bsky.app/profile/youg...
Few Britons support the return of corporal punishment, but there is a narrow lead for bringing back capital punishment

The stocks

It's basically the same vein of contemptible idiocy that leads to non vegans getting upset and self-righteous about culls of deer and feral goats, while they happily eat cage-reared chicken.

The other clear message: Someone can be an absolute legendary genius in some parts of their life and a complete wazzock in others (Nelson should never have been allowed onto land).

I don't think it's so simple - we tax some fossil fuels very heavily (petrol, diesel) but effectively subsidise others (kerosene for home heating).

A very good point! Thanks

Hmm, in the context of LVT people have argued that it is easier to est market value of land+building than pre-development value (I'd agree) and compensating only pre-development value presumably creates massive disincentive to development?

We have nothing approaching a rational fuel/carbon taxation system bsky.app/profile/neal...
Why is Net Zero not more popular? Well, lots of reasons but structuring our climate policy so that emissions reduction costs way more than it should might have something to do with it?

(there's a case to be made that fuel duty internalises other externalities of driving beyond GHGs, so the effective C price is lower, but given EVs pay £0, that only leaves 'local' emissions like particulates.
November 6, 2025 at 12:23 PM
Sure, in reality UK very averse to eminent domain. I also read (but no idea if reliable) that compensation in SG is (was?) only for pre-development value? stackedhomes.com/land-ownersh...
Land ownership in Singapore - here is everything you need to know
Freehold or leasehold? Who owns all the land in Singapore? If you have wondered about land ownership in Singapore we explore it all here!

also, it's right that we have frozen fuel duty, and we should continue to do so until the price of other sources of GHG emissions catch up bsky.app/profile/neal...

Interesting - I mean in theory the state can do that in the UK, I thought the situation was different in Singapore?
November 6, 2025 at 12:16 PM
and the fact that 90% of land is publicly owned? (well, 100% ultimately, but about 10% is private leasehold)

What identity does she claim? I've seen it said that black people can be British but not English, which I'm not sure makes any sense (especially as a Welshman whose Grandfather used English to mean 'UKish', because British had meant Welsh until a few generations earlier)

This is the issue with insurgent parties. On the one hand they can pose excellent questions of the established parties, and that's great. On the other hand, they don't necessarily have the answers themselves. To an extent that's fine, but that puts claims of 'replacing Labour' in context.

Nor have specific campaigns like those against palm oil. The idea that western consumers buying biscuits with a different, less land-efficient, type of vegetable oil is going to make any difference.
November 5, 2025 at 10:37 AM
I don't think this link between consumption and biodiversity loss is at all well understood in conservation itself, so it's hardly surprising if the general population doesn't get it. But decades of Attenborough-style filming hasn't helped.

Thanks! intriguing, I'd love someone to try it in Europe using ECHR.
November 5, 2025 at 6:52 AM
Interesting. Has anyone tried such a challenge against say, banning cannabis *outside* prisons?

Thanks! Love it that there's an app with the same font and colour scheme
