Spotted today in front of the Stabi Ost - first time I’ve seen stolpersteine placed in front of former places of employment / public service instead of domestic residence. Are these common? I really like the idea

Going through some files today and noticed a note that i I had overlooked when I wrote my chapter on race and racism in early west german citizenship law - underlines that position of BVerfG-Richterin Erna Scheffler was that ‘rasse’ and religion were ‘unseren Staat konstituierende Elemente’.

glad to see that Merz, having been criticised for his (unplanned, spontaneous) racist dog whistle of last week, has opted to replace said racist dog whistle with a völkisch klaxon

So tasteless that the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum sells these (the salesman told me that the Jehovah’s Witness ones are the bestsellers)

Looking back at the written report I submitted as expert witness for a hearing on reparative justice in citizenship law in the Bundestag in 2021 and forgot how much trolling I snuck in there

Another part of the same complex - @martincwinter.bsky.social, can you read what the minister has written in green on the left? Can decipher something about a Kabinettsitzung, so guessing he’s saying he won’t give the Nachruf, but would
appreciate help figuring exactly what he’s saying to be sure!

Can anyone help with deciphering the last bit of this? I’m pretty sure the state is ‘Frau MR Dlugosch, m.d.B (mit der Bitte) um weitere(?) _______’. Then I’m a bit stumped.

The commission concluded that the state should be allowed to ignore the West German constitutional prohibition on racial discrimination when dealing with naturalisation applications so that it could protect the existing racial character of the German people and its attendant (racial) state.

This shift in terminology for the discussion of race was diagnosed in the 1950s by several observers, from Frantz Fanon to Theodor W. Adorno. The material examined here shows that German civil servants were aware of this use of euphemism and worked with it self-consciously; see the attached excerpt

I’m choosing the secondary and recommended readings now. I want to set a few things on Auschwitz itself and its place within germanicisation policy (found a useful Steinbacher article from 2002 for this for now, maybe the Auschwitz chapter from Alex Kay’s ‘Empire of Destruction’)
