It doesn’t need to be a source of stress. I taught myself python that way, in a lab that was entirely running Matlab. In retrospect, one of the best things I’ve done during my PhD. I wouldn’t have managed to get a job in industry without it.

Encourage them to contribute to OSS projects. They will learn a lot, they will do good for the community, and it looks great on a CV. For the PI it's also a win because any code the student produces will be more reproducible, and is likely to be less bugged.
