Meh, I wish this was true but China shows you can have a functioning economy and develop competitive tech under authoritarianism.

Soft sci-fi is plane mechanics in space.

Hard sci-fi is submarine mechanics in space.

As a Turkish person witnessing my country slowly fall in the hands of an autocrat in 20 years I feel so much deja vu following US politics.

Plot Twist; he is a closeted Marxist successfully chasing his life goal of accelerating the self destruction of capitalism by getting fascists in power.

Well technically we might begin worshipping our AI gods at some point.

Very complex*

My dissertation is related to this. I argue that Metaverse people overestimate the sensory side of our existence and underestimate the social side.

Metaverse is not a VR or a protocol. It is a sandbox with enough sand to emerge complex very social relations. Eve Online is the closest thing to it.

Imho the expectation of not using a capability that would not have existed if it was not to be used is the boomer kind of entitlement.

It needs to happen in the entire economy in general. Progressives need to organize to learn to vote with their wallet. That'd be where it hurts.

To reiterate, Blindsight is just an amazing piece of art exploring this exact question.
January 2, 2025 at 12:16 AM
I think we do. Intelligence is a philosophical question as much as an empirical one.

If you can imagine entire advanced civilizations without conscioussness (recommend Peter Watts - Blindsight for this) as a thought experiment, that means consciousness is not a necessary condition for it.
January 2, 2025 at 12:14 AM
The essence of intelligence is problem solving. Tying that to consciousness and sentiency is a common error. It is anthropomorphizing the concept.

How about simple inflation? Starcraft 1 was $40 back then, equals $77 today.

As a Dune fan I quit at episode 2.

It reeks of plot inconsistencies, shallow characters only added for "something cool", etc. This is OK for a franchise like Star Wars but not Dune.

In original canon it always makes sense why someone would do something. Not here. Feels like GOT past season 5.

People ridicule this but it is a very intentional effort to normalize expansionism and erode post ww2 norms for the benefit of Russia.

I am one of these people.

I thought about these matters at a Ph.D. level since before genAI (since 2016).

To get it, you need an appreciation of how there are really only 3 fundamental kinds of information processing (classical, neural and quantum) and the braiin and ML is in the same category.

This approach to games is a dead end. Walking is easy to train on with abundant data. Games need very specific, never-seen-before interactions to work consistently.

Would rather see solutions that "skin" greybox but engine made games.
