Yes, but we aren't talking about life critical systems, just mild inconvenience. Undesirable failure modes may be acceptable if the impact of them occurring is less than the impact of mitigating the failure.

Tricky thing would be making sure clients are authentic (and have uncorrupted data) and are just as trustworthy as the authoritative server.

Steampipe indeed uses HTTP, and clients also support diff patching (which has consequences when you build your package if you want to optimise downloads!)
