- Americans themselves are responsible for the quality of the media they consume
- Americans’ access to public education affects how they process this information however
- The choices that American families make about these twinned aspects of our cultural and political life determine our future

- When appeals to logic and fair play seem to citizens as merely “Three Card Monte” scams by politicians and other elites, then masses of citizens will respond to more elemental approaches:
- fear others who are “different”
- fight someone taking away your “independence”

Therefore, one explanation for the GOP’s failure to use bureaucratic measures to improve life, is that the party out of power ignores what to dissenting citizens is “Blindingly Obvious:”
* Federal and often local governments answer only to elites, not everyday citizens
* True? That IS the perception

Americans have done this before:
- 1676 burning of the Colonial capital of Jamestown during Bacon’s Rebellion
- 1784 Whiskey Rebellion saw Federal overreach threatening economic livelihoods
- 1861 Southern Secession believed North violated Constitutional guarantees

* True or not, grievances unmet *

America has the highest rate of gun violence of any high-income country

From earliest years, America was shaped by the violent displacement of Indigenous peoples, the establishment and enforcement of slavery, and frequent armed conflict:
- THREE French and Indian Wars before the wars of American Independence and 1812
- Violent removal of “Civilized Tribes”
- Civil War

As H. Rap Brown said “Violence is as American as cherry pie”

Richard Lionheart:
- As a typical medieval king competing for territory and allies abroad he stood out, due to military might in “Christian” endeavors
- Viewed as the steward of his domains in England, France and Scotland, his father Henry II was much more effective

- In the last three Elections, voters in over 3/4 of the election DISTRICTS voted for Trump, despite clear evidence of the dangers to Democracy
- Although not containing a majority of all voters, these districts are consistent about voting for THEIR issues
- Democrats ignored the warnings

After Reconstruction, Congressional representation became even more skewed:
1) ALL of the Negro residents were counted in allotting Congressmen, but
2) pole taxes and Night Rider actions meant only well-to do Whites actually voted, for:
3) a bigger % of total members in Congress than Antebellum

In addition, only a small portion of the free population in the slave state of S. Carolina actually met the enfranchisement bar to enable them to vote. Thus 20 percent, or usually less controlled the votes of the per-capita richest US state, AND led the Secession movement!

Interesting observations:
- Only Brazil and America were the Slave Societies that when becoming independent, did NOT fore swear slavery
- Many countries have had as expansive designs on their neighbors as USA, but rarely with such implications of “Divine Guidance”

I agree. Our legal system does not closely resemble most of rest of the developed world

1) Each sovereign nation is entitled to their own constitutional design
2) American support for Ukraine MAY have some implied moral justification, but at heart, we should support that country, because it is in our own best long-term interests

- USA has the highest gun violence rate of any INDUSTRIALIZED nation. - Several of the better-performing nations do have enthusiastic gun ownership societies; just better managed than in America

- Interesting Fareed Z segment Sunday by author of “Bowling Alone,” who in 1995 traced the withdrawal of Americans from many social spheres
- They were speaking of how in early 20th Century, citizen action reversed many of the ills from the Gilded Age, (while also creating some new vulnerabilities)

..when deciding major decisions domestically, as well as perceived external enemies
* I wish intelligence and attention to great social and political issues by Americans always brought the best results
* But, they did not; and yes, effective leaders, good and bad and Religious Revivals influenced!

- The most influential columnist, and advisor to Presidents, wrote in 1912 about how the science of Psychology would be used to manipulate the electorate (as well as the marketplace) using modern tools of communication
- By 1776, Americans were the best-read in the world, but not always helped..

- All voters choose candidates (talking, evocative humans) based on each citizen’s IMAGINED self-interest, which rarely aligns with economic reality or long-term societal benefits
- Smart candidates and ORGANIZED political parties have recognized this since at least Martin Van Buren in the 1820s
August 26, 2025 at 11:00 AM
-,According to some genuinely intelligent and caring influencers, the problem is that a huge block of American voters are supposedly not paying attention
- This however could be said about voters during most of America’s history
- ALL elected Presidents, except Adamses were pro-slavery until Lincoln

Correct!
32% of FAMILIES in the Secession States owned slaves

“Southerners grew up, took spouses, reared children, worked, and died in the shadow of human bondage. It dominated the social structure, drove the economy, and permeated the political system”
