As someone who spent much of my life devoted to DEI education, I hate it when journalists recapitulate the rightwing framing of DEI programs as some kind of empty "wokeness."

We were at a facility that used to be well-known for its commitment to DEI and health access. Now I am literally afraid to name them for fear that these healthcare workers will face reprisals for treating a trans patient with dignity. THAT is what we lose in the crackdown on DEI programs.

They listened and made her feel comfortable accepting treatment, despite a previous experience with an old-school urologist who misgendered her and really set us back in terms of getting help. THAT is DEI training in action.
