Ecosystems and Biodiversity DPhil student, @navarrosales.bsky.social, has recently submitted a paper showing how Cerrado trees exhibit a productivity–fire tolerance trade-off. Read about it in recent blog post here: www.oxfordecosystems.org/post/functio...

Functional traits influence woody stem productivity of Cerrado trees across altered fire regimes
Cerrado trees exhibit a productivity–fire tolerance trade-off. Bark protection and light adaptation help maintain NPP under high fire intensities, as both structural and acquisitive strategies mediate...

The data paper for the 7th Plant Functional Traits Course has been published! We sampled 171 species across an 800 m elevation gradient in Witsieshoek, South Africa. The dataset covers morphological traits, leaf assimilation, thermal imaging, ecosystem fluxes and much more:

Many consecutive annual fires? 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Not extreme nor a problem for the Cerrado grass layer!!! More like a solution!🔥🔥🔥 See community, functional, and population responses of Cerrado grasses to seven consecutive annual fires in our new manuscript out today in Open Access!

Simone Reis & colleagues show why Amazon transitional forest is vulnerable to drought.
Typical savannas dominated by shrubs and small trees resist it, but adjacent ecosystems with bigger trees ("Cerradao") suffer large productivity losses, especially below-ground.

Sensitivity of tropical woodland savannas to El Niño droughts
Abstract. The 2015–2016 El Niño event led to one of the hottest and most intense droughts for many tropical forests, profoundly impacting forest productivity. However, we know little about how this ev...
