We often hear that an actor has to shed their past baggage or experience before playing a new role. But often a character requires otherwise. That’s what the role of Sue demands of the actor playing her, and Demi Moore in THE SUBSTANCE delivers with excellence.

While I did not watch many series this year, I love every single episode of HACKS season 3. Every episode is a perfection, with the season finale that gives a nod to a classic film about backstabbing rivalry, and in doing so, the series’ episode becomes a classic on its own.

In the spirit of resilience, I find Mickey Lai’s short film WAShhh gripping. In only 23 minutes, she gives us a complex look of racial division, womanhood, and power domination, all over washing sanitary pads in the middle of a night.

There is no other film that captures the beauty of resilience and resistance as both strong and gentle as I’M STILL HERE. Walter Salles shows us the horror of oppression, the terror it brings to a family, and the impossibly positive determination, led by the terrific performance by Fernanda Torres.

However, as they were chosen by jury members, then if the jury members saw them fit, well, it’s their preferred choices.

On the other hand, all Best Screenplay winners of the trifecta of Berlinale, Cannes, Venice got me, “Yeah!”
