16- Thornhedge by T. Kingfisher
Rating- 3 out of 5

A fairly decent fairytale with a very lovable main character. I don’t think it’s a brilliant book but it’s short so you could probably start and finish it on a long bus ride.

15- Celestial Monsters by Aiden Thomas
Rating- 4 out of 5

The last book in a duology, if you like Percy Jackson it’s kinda like an Aztec version of that but incredibly queer. I’m a big fan of Aiden Thomas’ work and definitely recommend this and his other book Cemetery Boys if you’re interested.

14- The Sapling Cage by Margaret Killjoy
Rating- 2 out of 5

I wanted to like this so bad, a story about a transgender witch sounds so cool. Unfortunately, the pacing in this is a nightmare, it violates “show don’t tell” often and the prose annoyed me to no end. Can’t recommend it.

13- Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle
Rating- 5 out of 5

Funnily enough this is my first Chuck Tingle book and fuck this guy can write! Fantastic novel about the horror of gay conversion camps. I very much appreciate that the book doesn’t throw the entirety of religion and faith under the bus as well.

12- Hammajang Luck by Makana Yamamoto
Rating- 5 out of 5

This was a fun little sci-fi heist book with a trans-masc mc. I loved every minute of this book and I very much going to be looking into Makana Yamamoto’s other works.

11- Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
Rating- 5 out of 5

Technically a re-read, but this book is a modern classic for a reason. A slow atmospheric story about love, loss and accepting one’s fate. Beautifully written and somewhat haunting, I would definitely recommend if you haven’t read it already.

10- The Witches are Coming by Lindy West
Rating- 3 out of 5

While it was decent and fairly comedic feminist book, it doesn’t really say anything new which is fine, but I wanted to hear something I haven’t seen a lot on tumblr, I suppose.

9- One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig
Rating- 4 out of 5

A fairly cute and compelling romantasy with an interesting world. An enjoyable read but that ending was fucking incredible.

8- Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah
Rating- 5 out of 5

An absolutely brutal take down of American prison system, if this book isn’t remembered and studied in the next decades, we have failed as a species.

7- Godkiller by Hannah Kaner
Rating- 5 out of 5

This book fucked so hard. Picked it up on a whim and loved every minute of it. Kissen might be one of my favorite MCs in fiction, extremely excited to read the rest of the trilogy.

6- A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher
Rating- 5 out of 5

I think if I was a middle school teacher I’d make this book required reading. Equal parts humorous and surprisingly relevant given the current political climate. Definitely a recommend if you don’t mind YA.

5- Circe by Madeline Miller
Rating- 4 out of 5

I saw a lot of people hyping this up as “better than The Song of Achilles” and I cant say I agree. It’s still a great book in its own right however, and I hope Miller continues to write more myth stories. I cant get enough of them.

4- The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kidd
Rating- 5 out of 5

A book so good it caused a crisis of faith in me that I’m still dealing with to this day. Truly an inspiring story.

3- Will Save the Galaxy for Food by Yahtzee Croshaw
Rating- 3 out of 5

Of the three I’ve read, this is best of Croshaw’s books in my opinion. The plot was good, the humor got a few chuckles out of me and the characters were very hit or miss. It was overall a fine story.

2- Bookshops and Bonedust by Travis Baldree
Rating- 5 out of 5

Buff orc mc, cozy bookstore by the shore, doomed yuri romance and a feisty rat lady?! I love Baldree’s work so far but I think this one is my favorite. Very much looking forward to the third book later this year.

1- World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil
Rating- 2 out of 5

Really disappointing. It was sold to me as a memoir mixed with a nature book which sounded like a fantastic idea to me. However, the nature connections were weak and it only seemed interested in nature in a controlled, shallow way.
