This presumed braconidae fooled me into thinking it was a sawfly for a moment. Two females feeding on pollen/nectar of Canadian Fleabane. Eyes not as good as they used to be. 🙄

This parasitic wasp emerged yesterday from an overwintered Dolerus larva. IDed as probable Tryphon sp. by Max Parkhomenko on iNat.

It was a pleasure to introduce sawfly identification to workshop attendees @britentsoc.bsky.social yesterday alongside the immensely knowledgeable Andrew Halstead. Thanks to those who attended.

Emerged today from its winter cocoon in damp sand, this rather wonderful Sciapteryx costalis soror (the Shady Sister) sawfly. Rarely seen due to their habit of skulking around at ground level.

Sawflies haven't really embraced the blues. Best we can manage is this Clouded Fusehorn, Arge enodis.

I don't think our insect illustrators are at risk from Google's Gemini AI. I asked it to draw a sawfly on a flower and this is what it produced.

Larva of the sawfly Euura pedunculi, Sallow Pea-galler, make pea-shaped galls on broad-leaved willows and sallows. Still some around at this time of year as well as vacated galls.

The Woolly Alder Sawfly, Eriocampa ovata, exudes waxy fibres in tufts from pores in the skin. After each moult a new coat has to be exuded. The waxy fibres clog the jaws of attacking ants.

The iron rich waters of Flitwick Moor. Good sawfly territory.

Check fallen apples for ring scars. Telltale sign of the Apple Fruit-borer sawfly, Hoplocampa testudinea.

Another Caliroa slugworm sawfly. Not yet the final instar but I suspect this might be C. cinxia, Yellow-headed Oak Slugworm. Head yellow-brown without a dark band, anal bristles pale and 2nd and 3rd pair thoracic legs dark.

Must be Proms season.

Several of these Caliroa on oak this evening. Dark band across the head above the eyes, 2nd and 3rd pairs of thoracic legs dark and anal bristles pale. Characteristics mean these should be C. annulipes - Ring-footed Slugworm.

Multiple mines of Lanced Leaf-borer Sawfly, Metallus lanceolatus, on Geum urbanum in the garden today. Seemingly only two previous Beds records!

Planted a small wood near the house 25 yrs ago and now get plenty of these in the house this time of year. Climb up the walls and in through windows. Southern Oak Bush-cricket, Meconema meridionale. #ukwildlife

The Dock Mandrel Sawfly, Ametastegia glabrata, found yesterday whilst looking unsuccessfully for Tenthredo sawflies. It'll do. Hoping to rear larvae from this female.
