A moving poem. My father was born the same year. He was headhunted by C.P.Snow to work in radar research during the war years. Something he barely talked about.

Fabulous photo of one of my favourite butterflies. Though as with children, it's impossible to actually have a favourite anyway.

Gorgeous images. We've had a sudden drop in numbers in our corner of Lincolnshire too.

Thanks for the review. A possible Christmas present for our son who is a geologist and involved with disentangling the early 'family trees' of paleo species.

Yes! They arrived with us yesterday all over the buttercup flowers. Our young grandchildren found the name as amusing as anything in their comic books

For that one frog, its existence is anything but minor. It strikes me, the more I learn of botany or insects, that each one has its existence and an identity, as we do. Once we know them by name, be it Thick-legged Flower Beetle, Green Carpet, or Common Frog, we have a relationship with them.

So do the moths! There seem many more small moths among the grasses this year than last.

Wonderful camouflage!

I found out yesterday what the Chinese character on the wings actually means. It's Chinese for 'mountain'.

Our son once brought home a school chemistry book. It was all about the chemistry of colours; matching colours are formed from identical chemicals. It amazed me to see both the relevance of chemistry and the limited numbers of actual different elements that make up the huge array of nature's shades.

The atmosphere of the photo is gorgeous.

Thank you for correcting one of my Ichneumon wasps via iRecord recently. I do fully appreciate the feedback.

That's wonderful. I enjoy watching the caterpillars as they grow. We had a pupa last year and despite watching it on and off most of each day, I missed it actually emerging.

I've found several Brimstone eggs, but all were on two or three twigs of one common buckthorn tree. Our other five or six common buckthorns don't seem to have any yet, but the Brimstone has been busy today up in the top of a mature alder buckthorn.

Last week I heard and saw my first whitethroat of the year, several in one field with dense old hedgerows. What a contrast to their African travels. You suggested some months ago that I should try bluesky. Well, here I am at last and glad to find you and your words again.

What an utter wilderness. I didn't know it was still possible in the UK to see such a primeval look.
