It’s always a special treat to come across a red fox on a hike. Most of the time they are quite skittish, but this one hung out for a little while and seemed to be very curious about me. Such a nice looking and healthy fox! Happy Friday!

Watching this brilliant yellow Western Tanager with its orange-red head was like watching a flame dance among the dark conifers. This was my first good look at an adult male during breeding season, and they are absolutely stunning!

American Dippers are North America's only aquatic songbird, and we watched this one go underwater to hunt for prey on the stream-bed while the fledgling waited patiently nearby, bobbing up and down the entire time. We sat quietly to observe nature’s miracle happening right in front of us. #birds

Seaside sparrows are the darkest sparrow in the salt marsh with dark gray coloration overall, a contrasting white throat and yellow in front of the eye, Some might call them plain or dull, but I think they are quite beautiful.

I really enjoy observing Yellow-breasted Chat display flights where they shoot way up into the air and then flutter down to the ground softly all while shouting out a loud crazy cackle during the entire decent. They are definitely one of a kind!

I really enjoy observing Yellow-breasted Chat display flights where they shoot way up into the air and then flutter down to the ground softly all while shouting out a loud crazy cackle during the entire decent. They are definitely one of a kind!

I was already at eye level with this waterthrush on the opposite bank, so I just needed to find an open area with no branches to get a clean frame. Then, I composed it tiny-in-frame and used the happy fluffy trees to fill the entire background. Hope you like it!

Here’s another shot from our Boreal owl encounter after it finally put some distance between itself and the messy brush. I was able to capture this image with some nice golden-hour light illuminating the brush behind him.

Minnesota is experiencing the largest owl irruption in two decades, and after seeing all of the amazing owl images, I was having serious FOMO. Luckily, I had a ton of frequent flyer miles saved up, so we planned a last minute trip to go see the “invasion of the vole snatchers”!

American Kestrels are the smallest falcon in North America. They have a really cool way to hunt as they hover in the air up to 65 feet high, while keeping their head perfectly still to look for the slightest movement on the ground.

I can’t talk about Red-breasted Nuthatches without mentioning their adorable nasally honks, which is how we found this pair. We were able to spend a good amount of time with them as they fed in trees behind our Airbnb, and I got a couple of compositions I want to share.

Success! I went out to look for owls today and found this Screech owl within the last few minutes of my hike! This little one chose to roost in a nice natural cavity despite the hundreds of cavities along the trail that Pileated Woodpeckers are making.
