It was great to be part of the @birdlifeeurope.bsky.social meeting on agriculture last week in Puck, Poland. Farmland birds are in serious trouble in Ireland. Farmers are stepping up & more financial support & encouragement needed to reverse the declines. Agri policy needs to support them.

Good day at #Ploughing2025 Was happy to be invited by the Farmers Journal to speak on a panel w/IFA & INHFA abt the biodiversity crisis, restoring nature, & actions farmers can take at farm level. There was consensus among us that the funding for nature restoration must be clarified & committed to.

The culmination of 2yrs work w/many players. Last wk we launched our IBAs for seabirds. A significant contribution to the science in IE & we hope to govt meeting its legal obligations for seabirds as per Art 4 of Birds Dir which is overdue since 1998. All info▶️ birdwatchireland.ie/ibas-for-sea...

New garden. How many trees can I plant?! My ambitions are bigger than my garden. And there’s few Scots Pine, my fave. I’ll be dead before it takes out a wall, I think. I don’t know if it’s v deep rooted actually

Was delighted to see 10 Oystercatchers feeding on grassland at Hillside in Greystones today when visiting friends. Only a stones throw from the sea but still v urban and they weren’t too put out by the noise of kids and dogs though they kept their distance.

It only took 8 years for govt to put in place a landscape scale programme dedicated to saving Curlew though BirdWatch Ireland has been flagging for so long that this species is on the brink. Hopefully it’s not too little too late. Forestry needs to stay away frm areas impt for Curlew & other waders.
