I saw this bird from a distance and assumed it was a duck because of how it was perched flatly on this log over the water. But when I looked through my viewfinder, I was surprised to realize it was a Green Heron! Maplewood Nature Center, Ramsey County, MN 08/10/25 #Birds #Minnesota #Nature #Heron

The bird is dark blue, purple and brown on the back, and its neck is patterned in brown and white. A male American Goldfinch perched in a native plant called by many names, including: Wild Bergamot, Monarda, and Bee-balm. Most of the lavender colored flower petals have fallen away from these plants due to the time of year. The flowers have large, bulbous seed heads which goldfinch really like to tear into, in search of seeds. The bird is bright yellow across most of his body, except for black wings and a small black cap on his head. He has a short, wedged or conical-shaped bill which is orange in color and there are a few seeds stuck to it. He has pink legs and feet which are clinging to the one of the flower stems, thus bending it under the bird's weight. Ramsey County, MN 08/04/25

A vivid blue colored male Indigo Bunting perched on a cluster of Common Elderberry fruit. There are a few, small green leaves in front of the bird's breast and belly, but the rest of him is visible. He appears to be looking at the camera. The elderberry fruit are small and round. Some are still very green, but a few have ripened to a red-wine color. The stems of the plant are magenta in color. A single honey bee clinging to the vertical stalk of a native Hoary Vervain flower. The tiny purple flowers bloom on the stalk from the bottom up. The part where the bee is, has not flowered yet, while there are small purple flowers below the bee. The bee is black with fuzzy, yellow hairs all over it. Two flowers with about 15 petals each, which are a vivid pink -almost magenta in color. Their center is a cluster of hundreds of tiny spikes which are a blazing orange in color, as if they were on fire. The centers protrude upward, maybe half an inch higher than the petals. The pink petals droop a little, giving the flowers an "umbrella" shape. They have single, green speckled stems with no other leaves visible near the flower. The angle of the photo is from slightly underneath, looking upward at the flowers. Minneapolis, Minnesota 07/20/25

I finally managed a saveable Indigo Bunting photo from "The Stacks" which is a huge industrial/distribution complex. I firmly believe all the native plants are the reason. The plants bring in a good supply of insects to eat and feed to their young. Minneapolis, #Minnesota 07/17/25 #Birds #Nature

The bird is very fuzzy, with a white breast and belly, and sandy, brown on it's sides and top of head It has a big, black eye, and a dark bill. There is a dark brown stripe over the top of its head, and a thinner black stripe across it's eye. The bird is walking in this photo and has one leg up and extended in front of it. Monarch caterpillars aren't too picky when feasting on milkweed and will even consume the flowers. They have just started blooming within a week or less. This is Common Milkweed, one of fourteen native milkweeds here in #Minnesota #Nature #Wildlife #BloomScrolling
