Solidarity, fortitude, and poetry.
The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman
I loved how much Grossman both pulled on and challenged the deep variety of Arthurian stories, and legends. The protagonist, Collum, was lovable, while also an effective proxy for the reader to watch the collapse and transformation of the Arthurian dream.

Nuclear War by Annie Jacobsen
This was well-researched, well-written, and the scariest book I've ever read. The thing I found truly terrifying was the sequence of unstoppable bureaucratic processes that practically guarantee nuclear armageddon if even one missile is launched.

Harvard Square: A Love Story by Catherine J. Turco
I loved this deep dive into the history of a specific place across several centuries of its evolution. Turco stepped back and forth between her own personal experiences and stories of its inhabitants, property owners, merchants, and visitors.

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky
A gripping sci-fi novel, spanning millennia while keeping a tight central cast of characters. The evolutionary concepts at play were fascinating. The alien characters who were structured in such creative ways that they demanded empathy and inspired wonder.

The Great Transition by Nick Fuller Googins
Of all the post-apocalyptic stories I've read, this was the scariest, because of how real it felt. The description of the slow increase in natural disasters, and then the day of a cataclysmic Antarctic ice shelf collapse felt terrifyingly prophetic.

My 2024 Books! All 43 of them, if you can believe it. That's including books that I read aloud to Pippa at bedtime. It was a year for thrillers and mysteries, with some fantasy, one striking sci-fi novel, and some meaningful nonfiction. Scroll through to find some that stuck with me! #blueskybooks

#1 Feasts & Spirits by Finest Kind & John Huston
Gorgeous songs in Finest Kind’s harmonies and readings of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol by John Huston. When I read A Christmas Carol now, I hear these passages in Huston’s voice.
