I use a few different substrate combos (5 tanks), but most are a variation on soil or aquasoil, gravel, and a top layer of sand. My first tank has only caribsea eco complete gravel but shrimp love it all the same. They like wood and botanicals for sure, it gives them hiding places and grows biofilm
