I think it's great scifi precisely because it doesn't make the "collective" AI-like. Instead it's very capable, organized, sympathetic to the exceptions and their experience etc. It does however (naturally) raise the question of an individual's identity and right to self-expression.

I've seen this take floating around before seeing the show and having watched it I strongly disagree.

I think it is a very smart, nuanced and funny exploration of a clash of the American cult of individualism and culture of paranoia with a supernatural collectivism.
