In the second work, using an artificial pathway of chromosome condensation, we evaluated a long-standing hypothesis in the field that histone H1 phosphorylation is required for compaction of mitotic or mitotic-like chromosomes - turns out it is not compulsory!

In the first story, we measured histone modifications during highly synchronous mitotic entry and revealed among other things that deacetylation is minor during mitotic chromosome compaction, while it drops precipitously if one prolongs mitosis - for example, with nocodazole.
