Response to my post about ADHD symptoms reading: "Disagree. Systems are the way people live… who do you think is “normal?” Or more specifically “what?” Do you think there are some people that just, exist? Without any issues what-so-ever? Respectfully? That’s crazy. Every human being develops system that help them navigate in this world. Sometimes, these systems make total “sense” and help the person integrate well into their world. Sometimes our systems make sense to us and what we need, but look “weird” to the outside world. Capitalism wants one type of person as the working class: docile, obedient, and hardworking. Critical thinking? Gross burn it. How many of human behaviors do we pathologize because they don’t serve capital?" part 1 of my response, reading: "Environmental model of disability, etc, yes, I know, sure, fine. But not for nothing, the "everyone's a little bit crazy!" line is... baseline pretty ableist. Because, no, NOT everyone is disabled the way I am disabled, and I DO need specific accommodations for my disability. Accommodations like medicine, for one thing, but also accommodations like an educational system which is designed with people like me in mind. A system of labor which does not unduly penalize me for my struggles. A culture in which people with my disability are not looked down upon or socially shunned. I need those accommodations in a way that other people simply do not, these are problems specific to me and to people with the same neurological differences that I have, and "oh but everyone has issues, why must we pathologize???" is NOT a helpful response to that. I was told "everyone struggles with certain things, you don't need a diagnosis for it" my entire goddamn life, but getting the diagnosis and getting medicated basically INSTANTLY improved my life and helped me live better in ways that I'm afraid simply cannot be blamed on capitalism, much though I would love to do it." part 2 of my response, reading: "Solving capitalism would definitely make almost everything in the world better for pretty much everyone, and also it would not solve the problems that my ADHD causes for me. Abolishing class and handing me ownership of the means of production does not solve my chronic time blindness. It does not make me more capable of interoception, it does not help my emotional processing skills, it doesn't suddenly grant me the capability to plan long-term or handle tedious tasks without feeling like I need to tear the flesh from my living bones. And it wouldn't stop neurotypical people from subconsciously rejecting me and feeling alienated from me because my brain works differently in a way which unsettles them. Talk to a neurodivergent person sometime about how it feels to try and navigate neurotypical sociality. I've been to leftist spaces where "autistic" is openly used as an insult, and no amount of Marxist-Leninist theory-reading circles does a damn thing to solve that. I have a disability, and in order to get diagnosed with that disability, I needed to go to a specialist and discuss my symptoms as symptoms of my disability. In order to receive help, you NEED to understand that there is such a thing as struggling beyond the average, that there is a level of hardship which is beyond the mean, and that that hardship is something which can be helped by accommodation. Sometimes, a thing is pathologized because it is a pathology." part 3 of my response, reading: "Neurodivergence is already an incredibly invisible form of disability - not a day goes by that I don't bitterly mourn how much pain and struggle I could have avoided in my life had I only been diagnosed earlier. But I didn't seek help, because I didn't think I had problems worth seeking help for. Everyone needs systems to live, after all. Nobody exists without issues. I just need to try harder, to apply myself more, because everyone struggles the same way I do, right? Right? Yes, by all means, do the Revolution, abolish capitalism, end class oppression. It would make living with ADHD a hell of a lot easier. But after the Revolution, I still need to be medicated, because I am not going back to the misery my mind used to be."
