PhD candidate, writing about the art of government of transport planning: maps as manifestations of power, models as inseparable from plans, questions of what planning is as questions of what it should be, and good planners as bad planners.
Parking is the one, true equaliser contemporary society. Even absurdly wealthy doctors and architects will start behaving like absolute lunatics - brandishing weapons, pet death threats, frothing at the mouth - over their "entitlement" to a parking space.

Meanwhile, in Melbourne…

Free PT on the weekends during Soft Launch Summer as a “thank you” for years of disruption.

That’s nice, provided you don’t need to be anywhere on time on a Sunday morning.

These downgrades to Victoria St are peak Melbourne.

We're moving the Peel St stop to Queen St, which reduces connectivity between the 57 and 58 tram, AND, the replacement stop at Queen St is only 140m away from the existing Victoria/Elizabeth stop.

Yarra Trams once again proving itself incapable of providing a consistent and reliable service.

Why subsidise this private company when it can’t even deliver the product it’s meant to?

And why isn’t this more of a political issue?

"I contribute less than a dollar a day to be permitted to store my private property in valuable public space and I'm infuriated that there's never any space available!!"

A durrr i’m a Lexus driver and I therefore have the right to park my stupid Lexus on the footpath

A major transport conference is asking for AU$950 for registration and they can't even be bothered to pay a designer or photographer to make a basic image for their website.

It’s absolutely wild that a person can be such a shit driver that they kill a child who is nowhere near the road and the subsequent punishment is $2000 and a 24 month suspension from driving.

This person should never, ever be allowed to drive a car again.

Would it really have killed you to hire an actual artist/designer to produce your billboard graphics, Royal Melbourne Show?

Amazing. Some time ago I lodged a request for a red light camera at the Flemington Road/Elliott Ave intersection at the top of Royal Park.

Much to my surprise, the DoJCS agrees (pending approval of funding 😒)

A "motorist" is killed and the headline rushes to proclaim the victim's innocence...

A "cyclist" is killed, but isn't afforded the same innocence, and is even reported as "standing or pushing his bike on Moreland Road" (tsk tsk you shouldn't have been there)...

Yarra Trams having an absolutely normal one with their complete inability to maintain a consistent ten-minute headway.

I, for one, welcome our new Melbourne Central platypus/dulaiwarrung overlords.

It's also $252m for a 2.7km tramway that entirely duplicates the existing King Street buses, about 100-150m to the south, which have the same frequency and travel time as the trams.

it's truly alarming the extent to which the "drive" website manufactures consent for absolutely stupid car brained nonsense, like raising the speed limit, or like saying how roads are safer in one paragraph and then immediately acknowledging the increase in traffic violence over the last few years

The planned OMR/E6 freeway (effectively a second western and northern freeway ring road) pales in comparison to the other, more expansive ideas that VicRoads/DTP planners have played with over the years.

This is a proposed 2040 arterial network, leaked to The Age in 2010.

This is the correct take.

A bunch of the hoarding in Melbourne Central has come down and you can now peer into the concourse that connects to State Library station.

The speed limit on Royal Parade between the College Cres and Grattan Street has been changed to a much more sensible 40km/h (previously 60km/h).

This is great news for the thousands of people who use this street daily, making it safer for pedestrians, bike riders, PT riders, and car drivers alike.

June 29, 2025 at 11:59 PM
New real time destination board for bus services outside Parkville station: activated!

The only thing missing is information about bus stop location. This might come in handy given that the 250 and 251 do not stop anywhere near here.

The Victoria Planning Provisions now contain this kind of thing too
June 6, 2025 at 2:43 AM
Melbourne's metropolitan strategies just LOVE to show how our neighbourhood centres could be made into little urbaniste Utopias if we allowed just a little bit of density and buried all the car parking; cute idea, pity about the lack of follow through.
