This is literally down the hill from my neighborhood. I could say I’m shocked, but I’m not. It would be nice if any of our elected officials could do something concrete to protect us.

And finally, as a bonus:
Start using Canadian or British spelling for English words. Centre! Rumour! Car park!

I think this would possibly anger the far right more than anything else on this list?

Yet, U.S. tariffs are threatening to hurt a lot of our international allies. For those of us who are financially able, diversifying our shopping habits will send a message that it is not America First, but rather, all of us together.

Why? This is a controversial one. Our money is arguably our biggest power to influence politics. We should undoubtedly continue to support U.S.-based businesses that are fighting the good fight right now…

6. Shop foreign

How: Some of our favorite brands are beloved imports: IKEA, Zara, H&M, Samsung, Nintendo, and many more!

Why? Another form of broadening your perspective. Also, I can personally attest to how fun it is to blast Norwegian-language pop music out the window next to the pickup truck with the Don’t Tread On Me bumper sticker. Operation: Tread - successful.

5. Listen to foreign music

How: My best tip is to find an artist or genre you already like, and use the “similar artists” tool that most streaming platforms have. Dagny, Janoobi Khargosh, and Ela Taubert are a few of my favorites!

4. Download the BBC app (or other external news source)

How: The App Store (or, follow them on your favorite social media sites!)

Why? Ever get the feeling the far right is messing with your media? No news source is perfect, but broadening sources will help get to the truth.

Why? Now you’ll be able to talk in code about the guy wearing the red hat in front of you at the In-N-Out! Also, learning another language expands your world and perspective. The far right will absolutely hate this.

3. Learn a foreign language

How: There are dozens of free apps! Duolingo is most well-known. There’s also lots of content on YouTube. Spanish is a great, widely spoken language that tends to be easier to learn, but the possibilities are endless!

2. Make foreign friends

How: Places like Reddit or BlueSky are a great place to start.

Why? Meeting people from other countries is a great way to get a different perspective on what’s going on in the world.

1. Switch to Metric

How: use your phone settings to switch to Celsius and Kilometers.

Why? There’s nothing more unsettling to the far right than using the international standard for measurement. Also, converting distance will be a lot easier!

Yet, he will have functionally no power to undo the damage the bill causes even if Dems do take back the Senate in ‘26. So, many people are grieving about the impacts to people’s survival, and are mad that he is framing it as an electoral opportunity rather than as a call to immediate action.

To those defending Schumer, I think what many of us are objecting to is that it seems he is thinking of the damage of the bill in terms of how it will impact the election in 2026. That it will “haunt our republican colleagues” refers to them being voted out.
