Well, more on dominant–non-dominant hand differences here, but I think when I write I'm coordinating muscles ranging from the fingertips to the shoulder to precisely manipulate the point in space. If I try to just use my fingers, it's real weird.

I expect it's that there's more margin for error with the small lever arms of the fingers, and less for the long lever arms of the humerus and forearm. But I don't know!

As a string player, I've found that most of the lack of dexterity of the non-dominant hand is in judging its position in space, not in moving the fingers. That's precisely the difficulty of bowing, not the difficulty of fingering.
