Honestly, it's hard to tell if the hunters who grumble about lack of deer in Wisconsin are a large group or a vocal minority.

Either way, here's an updated look at what the data has to say: nathanwoelfeloutdoors.com/2024/11/27/a...
A dive into Wisconsin Deer Hunting Data
Last week, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources released its preliminary harvest data for the 2025 Wisconsin 9-Day Gun Deer Season. 182,084 deer were harvested during the gun season, down …

I know I'm relatively new here, but I'm not new to writing about the outdoors.

My website, nathanwoelfeloutdoors.com, turned five years old this week.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey and shown interest in the beautiful Wisconsin outdoors!

Some shots of the Northern Lights from last week.

It's ironic the devices that help more people enjoy this are part of the reason we don't spend enough time looking up in the first place.

Here's something I wrote about my last encounter with the Aurora: nathanwoelfeloutdoors.com/2024/05/30/u...

The Badgers don't seem like a team that has quit, I'll give them that.

They just aren't any good.

Not pictured: one proud dad who was just as surprised as his son that it wasn't a bluegill on the other end of the line.

If you love nature, purchasing an annual Federal Waterfowl Stamp is one of the best investments you can ever make.

It's more important now than ever. The current federal budget reduces funding for wildlife refuges to its lowest levels in two decades: nathanwoelfeloutdoors.com/2021/08/19/w...

Setting the hook on a fall salmon is like hooking into the bumper of a pickup truck and then the truck drives away.

It's pretty much the best.

Yeah, yeah. I know these have been out for a while.

But I finally had time to test and review them?

Is this truly a game-changing spin on a simple classic?

Kalin’s Pendu Jig Review
A few years back, the Kalin’s Pendu Jig hit the market. As someone who frequently fishes with jig heads, I remember being immediately intrigued by the prospect of being able to add more actio…

Hey, if you plan on hitting the woods this fall and haven't been practicing, you should shoot your bow.

If you have been practicing, you should shoot your how.

Bow hunting practice tips
Bow hunting is the least forgiving form of hunting. That makes practice and self-awareness two of the primary factors in your success. The two go hand-in-hand. You really can’t have one witho…

Call me crazy, regardless of the extent of Edwards' injury, my outlook for this Badgers team is largely unchanged.

Last year, you rolled with a QB who was 110/116 in the FBS in passer rating.

You're getting a dead frog bounce regardless of who is under center.

The red-spotted purple butterfly is one of Wisconsin's numerous native butterfly species.

While they will eat nectar like other butterflies, the bulk of their diet is fairly unique. They prefer to get nutrients from tree sap, fermenting fruits, gravel, and even decaying animal carcasses.

First time having a bear on camera on land I hunt.

I've only seen one in the wild. Wouldn't mind seeing this one from my deer stand in a few weeks.

Here's one of my fishing hot takes that shouldn't be one: there's no such thing as "trash fish."

If you've caught a fish today, you've had a good day.

All fish serve a purpose and even invasive species are largely the fault of human action.

We’ve discovered a literal miracle with almost unlimited potential and it’s being scrapped for *no reason whatsoever*. This isn’t even nihilism, it’s outright worship of death and human suffering.

I don't doubt it will happen but, I hope Woo gets an amazing ovation when he takes the mound at AmFam.

He's more than earned that much.
This is why you go pay to keep Brandon Woodruff. It isn’t even about how he’s pitching on the mound, necessarily. This — keeping one of the best pitchers in franchise history through the best era of the franchise’s history — is meaningful. Watching Woodruff do this is meaningful.

🚨 There’s a lot of horrific news out of Washington right now—but you might have missed this: Senate Republicans just introduced a plan to sell off 120 million acres of our public lands.

Let me break down what’s in the bill and why it’s a full-scale land grab. 🧵

It's tubercles season!

I love tubercles season.

The bony bumps on the head of this redhorse are called tubercles. While they help with protection during mating season, they can also augment the fish's sensory capabilities.
