Looniest vote of the day: A tie for chair of Committee on Religious Liberty. Then, before ballot #2, the body realized the senior candidate wins.

But a twist! The winner deferred to noted archconservative, ++Alexander Sample of Portland.

Bishop Mark W. O'Connell of Albany was elected chairman for the Committee on Protection of Children & Young People, winning by just 10 votes.

Ballots got increasingly close beginning with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops' election for chairman of Canonical Affairs and Church Governance; Archbishop Jeffrey Grob of Milwaukee won by only five votes.

Backtracking a bit to the other votes. Auxiliary Bishop Peter L. Smith of Portland, a South African-born prelate who moved to the U.S. during Apartheid, was elected chairman of the Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has overwhelmingly approved revisions to the text of "Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services", including the addition of information intended to combat gender ideology.

The USCCB has elected Bp William Wack, CSC of Pensacola-Tallahassee as chairman of the Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis.

Wack has previously shown himself a friend to Black Catholics, including the Knights of Peter Claver.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has elected Ukrainian Catholic Archbishop Borys Gudziak of Philadelphia as chairman of the Committee on International Justice and Peace.

Gudziak has strongly supported the Ukrainian war effort.
