I took a shower, ate some ramen, read a chapter of Syllogismes de l'Amertume, took a nap, and indeed: felt a little better!
My back hurts, I’ve got a sour taste in my mouth, I’m wearing mismatched socks and I need a shower and there’s snow on the ground and my feet are cold. Why yes, I think it is high time for me to pull old buddy Emil Cioran down from the shelf before I maim someone or myself!

This is a beautiful, melancholy and (or so it seems to me) Murnanian short novel. I enjoyed it immensely.

So I see there’s Adam Mars-Jones on Houellebecq in the new LRB. Practically guaranteed to be the most irritating book review of the year.

Not a bad hotel room, especially after I scrubbed the small amount of blood spatter on the bathroom wall.

Three books that I have devoured in recent times, all of which are of a dark nature. Different hues of darkness. All superb.

Thanks to @kirkdalebooks.bsky.social for the Blackwood heads-up.

Something about the atmosphere here reminds me of when I first got to grad school. Was excited to be there but there also seemed to be a rigorous current of something it took me way too long to name.

We published two stunning novels earlier this year. First up was Nathan Knapp's "Daybook", "an absolutely one-of-a-kind book that held me rapt from the first word to the last" (Ben Loory). UK readers can get it with a couple of clicks, £10.99 plus postage, right here: www.paypal.com/instantcomme...
