At the Natural History Museum today for @bou.org.uk’s conference - A Day at the Museum

It’s a fantastic setting for learning about the importance of natural collections for #ornithology research - talks have been fascinating so far!

Look up #BOUasm25 for Bluesky presentations

Could bird #conservation in vineyards enhance their soundscapes and lead to improved tour experience and wellbeing of visitors and workers?

This could support the creation of multifunctional landscapes that support nature, people and business prosperity

To isolate the effects of #birdsong, we experimentally enhanced ambient soundscapes (off 🔈) during some tours by playing birdsong of 5 additional species through hidden speakers (on 🔊)

👉 visitors who experienced enhanced soundscapes reported higher scores, including for tour satisfaction

After vineyard tours, we asked visitors about their experience through a survey 🗒️

Visitors who experienced louder and more diverse #soundscapes reported higher sound enjoyment and soundscape connectedness. They reported that the "sounds were appealing" and made them feel "relaxed"

Using AudioMoths from @openacousticdevices.info we recorded vineyard soundscapes and then characterised them using acoustic indices

We showed that vineyards with higher bird species richness 🐦 had more diverse and louder soundscapes 🎶

#viticulture is a rapidly growing industry in England and it is strongly embedded in #ecotourism. Vineyard tours provide an opportunity for people to experience nature.

Previously, we identified the determinants of bird diversity in vineyards

The Anthropocene is characterised by:

⚠️ biodiversity declines
⚠️ extinction of experience
⚠️ declining wellbeing

At #BOU2025, I'm talking about how it may be possible to address all 3 challenges

As biodiversity losses continue and our lives become increasingly disconnected from nature, it is important to find new and accessible ways to experience natural soundscapes. Conservation initiatives could support this and benefit nature as well as our wellbeing.

Visitors who experienced our enhanced soundscapes scored their tour experience more highly. They reported the soundscapes to be more appealing and feeling more relaxed following the tour.

This demonstrates that sounds directly contribute to our nature experiences and wellbeing

🔉VOLUME UP🎵

We then hid speakers 🔊 during some vineyard tours to see what effect playing additional #Birdsongs of 5 species had on visitors' experience. This made the experimentally enhanced vineyard soundscapes even louder and more diverse 🐦🕊️

Following vineyard tours, we invited visitors to complete a short questionnaire where we asked about their experience.

Visitors to vineyards with richer bird communities and louder and more complex soundscapes, reported higher agreement with statements like those below

We monitored bird populations and recorded vineyard soundscapes to find that vineyards with ⬆️ species richness had louder and more diverse #soundscapes 🎶 The relationship was not upheld for bird abundance.
