We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of our team members, Patricia Sanchez Rau. She was involved with the project since its inception and gave many hours of research, poring over countless documents to identify entries relevant to Indigenous slavery.

Amerigo Vespucci, namesake of the Americas, was not only an explorer but also a slaver. In his letters, he recounts capturing and selling Indigenous people:

“We made sail for Spain with 222 prisoners... where we sold our slaves.”

At Nuwu Art in Las Vegas, a Memory Gathering flowed like water. Attendees invoked ancestors and shared stories of Paiute, Nahua, Ute, Diné, and Dakota lineages—of displacement, survival, and resistance. The space became a powerful affirmation of Native Bound Unbound’s purpose.

Big news! A stolen 16th Century manuscript—signed by Hernandarias in 1598—was returned to Paraguay after a failed $28K sale.

It outlined rules for treating Indigenous people. Some were early reforms—but captivity persisted.

Shoutout to NBU’s Dr. Guillaume Candela, who helped confirm it was real.

The foundation remains, but the stories must be reclaimed.

In Danvers, MA, Tituba and John Indian lived, labored, and endured while enslaved.

We propose a new historic marker — one that honors their survival.

During the Creek War, Andrew Jackson took two Creek children, Lyncoya and Theodore, captive and brought them to his plantation. Their stories reflect the tragic consequences of U.S. expansionism. 🧵
