This Labour Government should hang its head in shame.

End.

I don't know who the spokesperson was for the Home Office and I don't know who authorised the language but they should both be out of a job. When a Parliamentary Committee condemns your system, blaming the migrants is not the answer. The answer is to accept responsibility and to fix the system.

I am furious at the vilification of the immigrants and their families who have built lives here, who work within our systems, many in public service.

I am furious that this government continues to blame refugees, asylum seekers and immigrants. I am furious that we don't stand up and say "You are welcome here. We will help you and protect you and accord you basic human needs and fundamental human rights".

Furious that we fail asylum seekers: we fail to provide safety, adequate food, housing, medical care, legal representation, freedom from incarceration, safeguarding for children, we exacerbate the effects of their esperiences or war, torture and trafficking.

I am furious that this country refuses to acknowledge the circumstances which lead to people fleeing their homes and seeking asylum half a world away.

I am furious that it is choosing to perpetuate the myth of "illegal migrants". The right to seek asylum is a fundamental principle of international law. The Conservative Government may have sought to make it illegal to arrive by small boat but the right to seek asylum remains.

I am furious, furious at the ongoing performative cruelty of this government.

Because right now. It just feels like we’re living under the Tories again.

Except without hope that there’s something a bit better round the corner.

And that’s not a good place. #r4today

I’m in despair, beyond supporting charities in the relevant sectors and writing (yet another) letter to my MP is there any action I can take?
