Most poets I know are also professors/teachers, or freelance writers, or have another career altogether—sometimes writing related, sometimes not. Patronage is dead, as far as I can tell.

Anyway, I don’t know many “full-time poets” (i.e., people who are able to sustain themselves entirely through their poetry), but if you are one, or know the secret, please feel free to share.

In all seriousness, I can think of at least two organizations I did writing and/or teaching work for that still haven’t shown me the money after months and months, and it’s really sad. Pay the poets!
