So many orgs I once championed have now flip flopped or have started co-opting grassroots spaces and/or cannibalizing other orgs so Im just going to say @culturefixglobal.bsky.social is still doing incredible work after 10 years... and counting #CultureFix

Artwashing is real.

The worst companies will create a fund for artists to make themselves seem like they're doing something good. What's worse is that people actually believe that as a good faith effort rather than see it for the public relations stunt that it is. #CultureFix

Tech is no different. Artists are often made to compete for funding and have to go through longgg application processes only to get crumbs.
Mutual aid and decentralized models exist but often are not as well resourced #CultureFix

Also there are many in the philanthropic sector that tout that there are billions of dollars out there but never talk about the political/radicalized nature of the sector
i.e. why orgs > CodePink were in Ferguson attempting to direct where money went and who got it without accountability

Cultural diplomacy is a vehicle to create your own narratives and dump them on local communities. I no longer surf around that space, however, the koolaid is still strong over there esp amongst artists that participate in those programs. #CultureFix

Also most arts funding from the feds and states go to the largest organizations. California is much more experimental than other states however, there is still a power vacuum that is consolidated in both LA and the Bay Area by yt funders and yt led orgs. Very little trickles to rural areas

Foundations and funders almost always benefit from said programs. They create the criteria and what is to be funded. These are most often programs used to get buy in from local communities and are a form of cultural colonialism and co-opting of artists work in these communities #CultureFix

Capitalism and other systems of oppression thrive off telling us what can not be. "Oh, this is how we've always done it," or "That's not possible".

Art frees us from that. And if we can dream it, we can create it. #CultureFix #artsky

Question 4: We know funding for arts is often inaccessible, especially in the US, yet there are several government-sponsored “exchange” and “diplomacy” programs that fund independent artists. Who really benefits from this? #CultureFix

Equally harmful are artists and orgs who show up in mutual aid and community spaces to be seen, take up space or garner brownie points at the expense of our communities #CultureFix
This feels like a good time to also remind folks that you can not separate the artist from the art because the artist's power to cause harm is amplified by the power they get through their art. #CultureFix

Smthg that came up in a mtg I had today was that -- how you show up in these moments is a reflection of your actual values and ppl seemed pissed that I said it. Too many arts advocacy orgs talk a good game until its time to push money to those who are impacted most + not their "friends" #CultureFix

Question 2: Nina Simone said that the artist’s duty is to reflect the times? What does this mean and how are you seeing it in today’s world? #CultureFix

Question 1:

What is the relationship between art and social change? Is this relationship always radical?
