New Orleans is hot, and the bars were usually not air conditioned. A trough constantly filled with steamy piss smells to high heaven. filling it with buckets of ice controls the smell.

I had never seen a pee trough until my first visit to New Orleans as an adult, and pee troughs filled with ice were de rigueur.

It's my hope that as storage becomes more ubiquitous , regional pricing will mostly equalize out, as more people exploit regional price differences with arbitrage... but I admit I don't know how the market in France works, so maybe that won't be a thing?

I saw your Banks and Le Guin vid. I think that your categories are good as they stand, but recognize that at a high enough resolution, all imposed categories will be fuzzy at the edges. Biology bleeds into culture, which bleeds into technology. Don't stress about exact lines of demarcation.

I'm trying to remember an old SciFi short story, where Scientists started translating Dolphin's speech, and they started relaying their wisdom to the world. Turned out to be a hoax that the researchers were using to pass off common sense wisdom as alien Knowledge.

This "middle" perspective was considered important in the view of someone talking to the main character, about their specific mindset in their Math, that they felt would lead to a scientific breakthrough (maybe FTL?)

I have a memory of a moment in The Dispossessed, where the three societies, Harnish, the peoples of Tau Ceti, and the Earth Humans, were described as on a continuum between Overly mystical (Hainish) and overly Materialistic (Earth), with Anarres / Urras a happy medium.
