Yorkshire Museum had some proper gems, including this silk bonnet probably worn by a Danish woman. Found underneath the old monastery

Day 18 of #InsectAdvent - LET IT SNOW

Chionea (Limoniidae) are a genus of wingless craneflies commonly called Snow flies (not found in UK but 'strongly suspected' that they are here...). Adults can be seen scuttling across the snow in the winter

Got one of these in my change. Rather attractive! Nice way to raise the profile of the natural world.

Interesting leaf mine, Stigmella plagicorella The mine starts out thin and sinuous and then abruptly turns into a blotch!

Day 10 of #InsectAdvent & the Christmas flirting has ramped up

This male Robberfly, Pegesimallus teratodes, has striking, feather-like scales on its hind legs, likely used for female attraction during courtship. (& cleaning the dance floor)

Day 10 of #InsectAdvent & we are wrapping the presents

What about this bling covering - The genus Formosia (Tachinidae) have some of the most striking bodies. Its not for showing off but to hide in the mottled forest light (hiding as we do under a tree) their 'presence'

Day 9 of #InsectAdvent and our thoughts turn to a Christmas vacation.

And where best to go than Christmas Island where we can find Syritta maritima - one of the compost hoverflies whose larvae (the munching maggots) will recycle our leftovers

Another building stone. Larvikite from the Larvik region of Norway. Displays a wonderful blue/grey shimmer of light. Technically a type of syenite composed largely of anorthoclase feldspar.
