(10) My incredible student is funded through a diversity supplement. Which we have been told is at risk for cancellation. This unmandated take-backsies of contractual promises is disgusting, and can destroy active research quickly and lead vulnerable people to quit.

(9) Tell me to my face that all I have busted my ass for, and contributed to, is bullshit because I am a DEI candidate. Or perhaps admit you are not qualified to evaluate such things.

(8) We have ALL benefited from such initiatives. Anyone who wants to tell me I didn't deserve that Pell Grant I received as an undergrad which was essential in helping me afford school, and was given to me entirely because of my underprivileged background--you don't know anything.

(7) Do you value groupthink? DEI initiatives are NOT designed to place people into positions which they are not qualified for. They are designed to encourage people of different backgrounds to participate in society, and encourage diversity of thought. Science flourishes when we have new ideas.

(6) Do you know that hispanic people, black people, and women are MORE likely to have substandard medical care? Did you know that some populations are more susceptible to diseases like Alzheimer's disease, or diabetes? Wouldn't you like to know why?

(5) Would you like solutions to medical issues which aren't profitable for the big corporations? Does your child have a rare disease? Well, sorry, no solutions for you. Figuring out your problem is not profitable for a corp to invest in, and academia can't afford to study it anymore.

(4) Fewer students get to go to school. I'm sitting in admissions committee and we have to reduce offers because of uncertainty. Do you dream of your child having a better education than you? There are many ways to train your child for independence, are you cool with them having few options?

(3) Medical research is harmed. Do you wish your grammy had survived her stroke? Is your dad suffering from neurodegenerative disease and you have to take care of them? How many of YOU have had cancer? Do you think any of the medical care received is possible were it not for medical research?

(2) Do you know some of the batshit directives that have come down through the NIH lately? Do you have any idea of the impact? Here is a partial list of what I have observed in just the last few days (buckle up it's long):

They survived!

Absolutely! Thanks for the reminder.

Of course!

One of the most persistent and forceful critics was a neuroscientist from Stanford named Ben Barres.

He made it clear that he felt that many talented women had been overlooked and that the message that had been sent was tremendously damaging to fulfilling the NIH mission.
