My point would be that, while Soc Dem copying right wing policy has bought them a few years of relative peace on the topic of migration, the cause of their declining popularity has more to do with having been in power now for 6 years and beginning to be worn out

No, agree. Right wing voices in Denmark are now talking about "remigration", something that was not really seen as acceptable discourse in Denmark a few years ago

Dane here - not sure immigration policy is the main reason for declining support for the social democrats. Many things going on driving that decline. The Soc Dem made discussion on immigration policy fade a bit to the background by basically copying right wing policy. Not something I agree with!

Thanks - that made me chuckle

I assume you count Denmark via Hans Island? This doesn’t work 100% - I think part of Hans Island counts as part of Greenland. While Greenland is an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, it is outside EU (since 1985 as I recall)

Thank you for sharing the link. The Guardian (or their source) is wrong though, St Thomas is part of US Virgin Islands, not British. Denmark sold St Thomas, St Croix and St John to the US in 1917 for the sum of 25m USD. At the same time, US promised to stop asking DK if they could buy Greenland

Not an expert, but I guess actual invasion has not been seen as imminent so far. The patrols are there to monitor the area for e.g. presence of foreign parties that should not be there
January 29, 2025 at 10:39 AM
Defo not an expert on this topic, but since the patrols normally last 4 months and go through areas where no or very few people live, I guess it could be a problem to keep those machines adequately supplied with fuel

The US has had a military presence in Greenland since WWII, no doubt they could take over everything in no time if they wanted to, but that is a different scenario than what the dog sled patrols are there for
January 29, 2025 at 10:34 AM
Sure, no disagreement there. However, the point of the patrols was not exactly that, but rather to assert sovereignty and also monitor that foreign parties would not build up unauthorised presence. Remember, Greenland is a very big place (quarter the area of the US) with not a lot of people.

Of course those patrols cannot stand alone and need to be supplemented with other capabilities (vessels, drones, …) but the dog sled patrols have been used to assert Danish sovereignty since the international court in The Hague ruled against Norway in 1933. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sirius_...

Dane here: I get why people find the idea of patrolling by dog sled sounds funny, but there is a point. Greenland is a very big place with not many roads and the coast line not often easily accessible from the sea (ice and that kind of stuff). The dog sled patrols can get around In those places

Seen from over here in Copenhagen, not sure “hilarious” is how I would describe being in the focus of this nonsense with Greenland

Apart from changes to US governance, likely the new regime will have adverse impact for those seeking sanctuary in the US, global political stability, climate change, stores of corruption, etc

I wonder whether the US system of state and federal level government will mean both that (i) some of Trump’s desired changes will be hard to achieve, but that (ii) those changes he does get through will be really hard to unwind

If it’s your sort of thing, check out Laxnes Horse Farm (not far from Reykjavik) where you can ride Icelandic ponies. Enjoyed it with my wife 15 years ago
