Hero Freeman is the last survivor of a massacre that decimated the all-Black homestead community of Sunken Spring, Ohio. She was alone eighteen months before her younger brother burst from the ground and into her life. Prosper is unlike other little brothers. He changes size depending on his mood; his tantrums crack the walls; he floats in his sleep. He smells just like their mother. So, by the time a string of disappearances in the nearby town of Mercy claims Prosper as their next victim, Hero has had enough of loss. Armed with spider, shadow, and a sympathetic connection to the wilderness, she will take what is hers: first her brother, then her vengeance.
