Walter Linsley Meegan (1859-1944) was born in 1859, in Leeds and studied at the Leeds School of Art there. Meegan and his wife and family eventually moved to America and opened a studio on Fifth Avenue in New York, where he earned considerable praise and acclaim for his work.

Today, the Calder and Hebble navigation waterway, from Wakefield to Sowerby Bridge is a peaceful and scenic waterway. Once however it was a thriving artery and part of the major inland transport system that ran throughout the West Riding and upon which vast amounts of goods were transported.
