I would agree that there is some fear mongering around students, youth, and reading, but I think it’s important to be cautious that critical skills are still being developed even in a changing educational landscape.

This is not to say that the former isn’t valuable but that it is concerning to see so many people replace a critical part of learning for another.

I would argue that de-emphasizing the later is an issue. It is the skill most useful in developing media literacy, something that is becoming increasingly scarce.

These are distinct tasks though. One is knowing how to reformulate a problem statement into something that can be done by existing computational methods. The other is understanding how to take in and process large amounts of information and formulate some sort of thesis that you can substantiate…

Question: Where are our efforts best spent to mitigate the harm of generative AIs? Response: Legislation is good but moves way too slow for the pace of the problem. We need to be coming up with solutions and mitigating harm now.
