Back in the ‘60s, when I was a Barnard undergrad, there was a Columbia song:”Who owns New York? Oh, who owns New York? Oh, who owns New York, the people say. Oh, we own New York, we own New York! who? C-O-L-U-M-B-I-A!” It was barely funny then, and now…..

This was fascinating, Bennett! I joined the Phil. Dept.in 1979, around the time of a shift in the terms of MCPS membership for Department faculty, & later the shift in the center of gravity from physics to biology & the focus on pluralism. It was interesting to be around for that.

The situation is so overwhelmingly awful that the temptation is strong to retreat into one’s own space, for those of us fortunate enough to have that option. Or even just to feel immobilized, despairing, exhausted. What will these times call on us to do? Will we—will I—be up to it?
